San Antonio Photographer | 12 Tips for Photographing Your Own Children | Tip 1

  • Posted By : Chelsea/

  • Under : Photography Tips

In the age of selfies, photographs are part of everyday life.

This is especially true for parents…  We don’t want to miss a thing and everything they do is cuter than the thing before.  We flood facebook feeds from the moment we get their first photograph on ultrasound.  We “overgram” their every move on instragram.  We snap iphone pics and ask for “fancy” cameras for Christmas.  Let’s face it, children are cute and they grow too fast.  Documenting their lives is fun and truly important.

These photographs create a record… because truth is, it is easy to forget things in our sleep-deprived perpetually-busy state.  They preserve memories for the future.  They give us proof.  We *need* these momentos to embarrass our kids at their weddings.  Am I right?  🙂

We all take photos of our children.  Usually every day!

And while I strongly support hiring a professional photographer at least once a year,  I also want to share some tips with you so that you can take better photographs of your own children- with any camera at all.  I’m going to try and keep it at a beginner level with one advanced tip or two.

I will be sharing one tip a month, so don’t forget to come back and learn more!  You can also search the blog for “photography tips” to see all of the posts.

Chelsea Lietz Photography tips for photographing your own children

When you see a beautiful photograph that moves you, chances are, the lighting is appealing.  Light is crucial in photography, even with a snapshot.

Today, I want to urge you to turn off your flash and harsh overhead lights!  When shooting indoors, look for the sunlight.  Try opening your blinds and curtains and using this indirect light for your photographs.

Flashes can be a necessary evil in certain situations.  But my camera doesn’t even have one.  And the flash on my phone is turned off.  These on-camera flashes are harsh, unflattering, and often cause red eyes or startled looks.  They wash out skin tones and create harsh shadows.  Overhead lights make strange shadows and destroy your white balance. If you can find enough light without them, turn them off!

When photographing my kids indoors, I place them near windows or doors with indirect light.  (this means no harsh rays shining right in… unless you are going for that effect)  I watch how the light hits their faces.  Ideally, you want it to shine down their face and slightly from the side, or side light them.

You can also shoot into the window for a different look.  (see the bottom images below)

Advanced tip:  if you want to use natural light, but there doesn’t seem to be enough of it, raise your ISO.  The shots of Brynn in her crib below were shot at ISO 3200.  This creates some grain in the photo, but I don’t mind it.. especially in the black and white versions.    Did you know you can change your ISO on your phone camera, too?  ISO is how sensitive your camera is to the available light.  Read more here.

I photograph my children often, usually with my cell phone.   I am on instagram!  Follow ChelseaLietz if you like.  🙂

Here are some of my recent images of my own children using natural light inside.  (these are with my big girl camera)

It feels like Kolbie was just in my San Antonio area studio for her newborn portraits, but here she is back for her six month photos to show off her sitting up skills!  She is the sweetest baby and so happy.  We had a lot of fun recreating some of her newborn shots for her “grow with me” series.  The teddy bear hat is my favorite!  She looks downright fancy in pearls and a Dollcake Oh So Girly dress, too!

Interested in capturing your baby’s first year in a special package?  Please see what I offer here!

Last week on my facebook page I asked for nominations for a “deserving” family to receive a complimentary newborn session and the digitals with printing rights.  I explained that “deserving” could mean a wide variety of things and that I just wanted to choose a family currently expecting a baby to bless.  I was raised to give freely and joyfully, and that lesson stuck with me.  I love to give back and I was looking forward to doing this for one family.

And then… something so beautiful happened.

FORTY THREE kind-hearted people went out of their way to nominate someone to me.  They opened their hearts in an effort to tell me why these families that they loved deserved this little treat.  They shared stories of hope, courage, perseverance, admiration, and love.  Always love.  Just the people nominating others touched my heart and moved me to tears.

And then there were the families they told me about!  43 amazing families who have overcome obstacles, fought the hard fight, grieved and hoped again.  These families that stick together, lean on each other and pursue the dream of parenthood.  Through my tears, I read about cancer, miscarriage, lost jobs, stillbirths, fertility treatments, military deployments, hard work, foster families, answered prayers, serving the Lord, adoptions, depression, working two jobs, selfless giving, and LOVE.  Always love.

Instantly I wished that I could photograph every single family and love on every single baby.  But I knew I couldn’t do that and still support my own family.  So I stretched my original promise of one family to two.

I resigned myself to choosing just two families out of the 43.  I underestimated just how hard it would be to decide.  They were ALL “deserving.”  And so many of their stories intersected with mine in some way.  I decided to pray on it over the weekend.

And do you know what happened?

Over the weekend I got a message from the good people at First American Commercial Property Group in San Antonio.  They heard about my project and wanted to sponsor FIVE MORE FAMILIES.  I was so touched and crying yet again.  Love wins.

And I am so very happy to announce that I will have the honor of photographing seven of the families nominated to me.  It was still so very hard to choose, but such a joy to me that I have something worthwhile to give. It isn’t much in the scheme of things, but it is what I have to offer.  The Lord gave me a passion and I get to share it.  It doesn’t get much better than that.

The families I chose were sent an email today, via their nominating friend or family member.

When I meet these families, I will be sharing a bit of their story.  Whatever they are comfortable sharing.  And I will absolutely be sharing the photos of their sweet babies.

Love wins, you guys.  Love wins.

A past client saw this post. She has two beautiful adopted kiddos and says that photos of her children are one of her most prized possessions. So she wants to pay it forward!

She is sponsoring ANOTHER deserving family, bringing our total to 8.  The world is so beautiful.  You guys are so beautiful!  Love wins.

New Braunfels Newborn Photographer | Baby Girl Madeline

Madeline came to my San Antonio area photography studio for her newborn portraits.  She was the sweetest, sleepiest model with a gorgeous head of hair!  I loved posing her on a new blue fabric from The Studio: Fabric Backdrops and More.  I just adore baby girls on/in blue!  But we included plenty of pink props, too.  Madeline’s mama requested some angel wings, floral headbands, and girly touches.  Daddy requested a macro shot of her toes with their wedding rings.  I was happy to oblige.  I think Madeline was happy, too… she flashed me a few smiles throughout the session.

Congratulations on your beautiful baby girl K family!
